Meski sudah berulang kali diangkat ke film dokumenter maupun film panjang, kisah perjalanan band The Doors masih menarik untuk disaksikan. Kini giliran, sutradara Tom DiCillo yang mencoba menampilkan kehidupan Jim Morrison Cs di 'When You're Strange'.
When You're Strange' menampilkan sejarah The Doors yang belum terungkap selama ini dan menyuguhkan cuplikan-cuplikan yang juga tidak pernah dilihat publik lewat media mana pun. Tidak hanya itu,yang menjadi hal menarik adalah narasi film yang berdurasi 90 menit itu diisi oleh suara aktor Johnny Depp.
Kibordis The Doors Ray Manzarek menyatakan bahwa film ini mengisahkan hal-hal nyata mengenai The Doors,bersifat intim. Menurutnya, film tersebut mengungkap lebih dalam pribadi masing-masing personel.
When You're Strange' pun disebut-sebut sebagai 'Anti Film Oliver Stone'. Pada 1991 lalu, Oliver Stone sempat merilis film 'The Doors' yang dibintangi Val Kilmer. Namun film tersebut, mendapat kritik pedas dari para penggemar band yang populer lewat lagu 'Light My Fire' itu.
"Film ini lebih mempresentasikan karir The Doors sebagai band, tidak hanya Jim Morrison. Film juga menampilkan filosofis band dan sedikit renungan sosiologis," ujar Ray seperti dilansir Mercury News, Kamis (8/4/2010).
